Selling alcohol at self-service supermarket tills ‘absolutely ridiculous’

A group representing off licences has slammed the availability of alcohol at self-service tills in Ireland.

It is one of the issues set to come up at a hearing of the all-party Justice Committee today dedicated to "problem drinking" in terms of public order.

Members will hear from representatives of the Vintners Federation of Ireland and the National Off-Licence Association (Noffla).

They represent traders whose main business is alcohol sales and spokesperson Evelyn Jones says it is unacceptable that supermarkets are allowed sell drink at the self-serve area.

She said: "To permit alcohol to be sold at self-service tills at supermarkets, I think is absolutely ridiculous.

"How are we ever going to get to the core of the issues we are facing with alcohol when it's permitted to be sold, in bulk, at self-service tills and the only requirement is that somebody at the lotto stand is keeping an odd eye out for somebody under the age of 18?"
