Annual lighting of Christmas Tree on Buckingham St, Dublin 1 in memory of all those who have died fr

The Christmas Tree is erected annually in memory of all those who have died from drug related causes. It is a symbol of hope for the community and particularly for our young people affected by drug abuse.

The theme of the tree this year is that there is no recession in the drugs trade and that there must be no cutbacks or back pedalling in funding for services in treatment, rehabilitation and prevention services for drug users and their families.  Progress is not only threatened by a government seeking short term savings, it is also threatened by the recent upsurge in violence associated with the drugs trade.

The event is a reminder of the extent of the suffering that people from the North East Inner City have experienced.

Paddy Malone said ‘The drugs problem affects the person, the family and the whole community.  We have identified the pillars needed to hold together coherent policies around treatment, rehabilitation, justice, education and family support.  If any of these pillars are undermined the whole structure which we have built together will collapse’.

Fergus McCabe said 'This event marks the loss and hurt we have experienced in our families and communities and again reminds us that when we stand together with purpose we can find ways beyond the destruction of drugs and violence'
