The Midland Regional Drugs Task Force (MRDTF) is pleased to announce that it is running a major Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week from October 1st – 5th 2012.

The Awareness Week will be officially launched by Roisín Shortall, TD Minister of State, Department of Health with responsibility for Primary Care and Drugs Strategy on Monday October 1st  2012 at 11am in the Tullamore Court Hotel, Tullamore, Co Offaly.

The primary role of the MRDTF, which is funded by the Department of Health, is to research, develop, implement and monitor a more co-ordinated response to the problem of drug and alcohol misuse as experienced in the counties of Longford, Westmeath, Laois and Offaly.

The Drug & Alcohol Awareness Week will run from Monday October 1st to Friday the October 5th, with a total of twenty six events scheduled to take place across the four counties.

The aim of the week is to increase awareness about drug and alcohol related issues and to highlight the drug and alcohol support services available to people in the region.

The wide range of events scheduled to take place have been organised by the MRDTF in partnership with Community, Voluntary and Statutory agencies within the Midland Region.

The Task Force will also utilise the Awareness Week as an opportune time to promote its revamped website see www.mrdtf.ie which will also be re-launched on 1st October.

Antoinette Kinsella, Co-ordinator MRDTF states “The twenty six events have been organised through a partnership approach involving a wide range of agencies working in the midland region.

On behalf of the Task Force I would like to warmly thank all of the agencies involved and the Department of Health for their support in putting this programme of events together for the region. Events of this nature are very beneficial as they help raise awareness of the issues surrounding drug and alcohol misuse, help strengthen and support a community based focus to the problem and importantly mobilise partnership responses at local and regional level”
