Speaking today, Minister Curran said:
"The Ana Liffey Drug Project delivers vital services to the most vulnerable of drug users in our society including people who are homeless, members of the Travelling Community and non-nationals. Many of their clients have serious health, social and economic difficulties. It is important that both staff and clients have a safe and comfortable space from which to operate and I am delighted that my Department has awarded this grant today".
The grant will enable Ana Liffey Drug Project to carry out a number of works to their main building and will provide a dedicated space for group work and activities for the client group. The Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs also provided €230,000 for the project in 2009 for their homeless related drug services.
Minister Curran also said: "This funding comes on top of €600,000 of capital funding recently allocated to Local and Regional Drugs Task Forces. This shows a real commitment by Government to the work being carried out on the ground by Task Forces and community groups. The newly established Office for the Minister for Drugs will be working intently with all Task Forces Force to ensure that resources are directed in a targeted and effective manner".
