Regional data shows patterns of drug use across Ireland

These figures are taken from the National Advisory Committee on Drugs’ survey 'Drug use in Ireland and
Northern Ireland 2006/2007: Bulletin 2'. Cannabis was the most widely used illegal drug across the country, followed by magic mushrooms, ecstasy and cocaine.

The largest increase in cocaine use was in the northeast of the country where lifetime use of the drug rose from 1.2 to 5.6% of the population. Most other parts of the country showed an increase in cocaine use, with the exception of the southeast where use decreased.

The report shows significant increases in lifetime use of illegal drugs among all adults (aged 15 to 64) in the east coast, midland and western regional areas. Some of the largest increases in overall drug use were found in the west of Ireland. However use of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes decreased in the south (Cork and Kerry). Statistically significant decreases in the use of amphetamines, LSD and tobacco were recorded in the southwest.

Across all areas men were more likely than women and young adults more likely than older adults to use illegal drugs.
