More than 12,700 people get treatment to combat drug useMORE than 12,700 people are being treated for problem drug use, with about 8,600 of these getting the opiate substitute drug methadone, Pat Carey, Minister of State with special responsibility for Drugs Strategy and Community Affairs, said yesterday.

Seminar hears calls for expansion of needle exchange services across the countryDrugs service professionals attending a seminar on harm reduction services for drug users today heard calls for the urgent expansion of harm reduction services to address the high risks associated injecting drug use. The seminar ‘An Injection of Common Sense’ was organised to mark the launch a new guide on safer injecting techniques for drug users and was opened by the Minister of State, with Special Responsibility for the National Drug Strategy Mr. Pat Carey T.D.
