Similar to our 2007 conference on Emotional Intelligence, Mental Health and Juvenile Delinquency this years conference will launch a major research study on alcohol use, drug use and family functioning conducted in Ireland with 492 young people and will invite a team of international experts from the UK, the US, and Australia to respond on evidenced based approaches to working with young people who use and abuse alcohol and drugs.

YOUNG PEOPLE, ALCOHOL, AND DRUG USE: A SURVEY OF 492 YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH AND SOUTH EAST OF IRELAND

PROF DAVID FOXCROFT, Professor of Health Care Practice, School of Health and Social Care, Oxford Brookes University, UK. Prof Foxcroft is the lead author of a Cochrane Review of primary prevention for alcohol misuse in young people, and author of a World Health Organisation Technical Report on preventing alcohol misuse in young people.

He will present on:
WHAT WORKS IN PREVENTING ALCOHOL MISUSE IN YOUNG PEOPLE

PROF HOWARD LIDDLE, Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health, School of Medicine, University of Miami, USA. Prof Liddle is an expert on the development and evidenced-based refinement of effective family therapy intervention for young people who engage in substance misuse. His work has been recognised through career achievement awards from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Family Therapy Academy, and the American Psychological Association. He is widely published and his work includes ?Adolescent Substance Abuse: Research and Clinical Advances (2006) published by Cambridge University Press.

He will present on:
EFFECTIVE FAMILY-BASED INTERVENTION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ENGAGE IN SUBSTANCE MISUSE.

PROF TRACEY O LEARY TEVYAW,Assistant Professor of Research, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, Brown University Centre for Alcohol and Addiction Studies, Rhode Island, USA. Prof Tevyaw is widely published in peer-reviewed journals and has numerous book chapters on the topics of using CBT, brief intervention, and motivational enhancement in young people who engage in substance misuse.

She will present on:
REVIEWING THE EVIDENCE FOR MOTIVATIONAL ENHANCEMENT AND OTHER BRIEF INTERVENTIONS FOR ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE USE.

DR JOHN HOWARD, Senior Lecturer and Consultant Clinical Psychologist, National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Dr Howard was a member of the Technical Steering Committee of the WHOs Department of Child and Adolescent Health and Development for 6 years, and since 1992 he has been a consultant to WHO, UNICEF, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Arab Council on Childhood and Development, on street youth/children in developing countries and the health of male adolescents. He has worked at the WHO/HQ in Geneva and completed field-work in India, the Philippines, South Africa and Egypt. Since 1999 he has consulted to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), with field-work in Lao PDR, Viet Nam, China and Thailand on capacity-building for the community treatment of young drug users.

He will present on:
