Johnny Connolly: Understanding and Responding to Illicit Drug Markets

Understanding the organisation, scale, nature and dynamics of a drug market is a critical requirement for effective policy-making and interventions designed to disrupt their operation and minimise the the associated harms. Studies of drug markets can contribute to and enhance intervention strategies, such as law enforcement or harm-reduction activities. Despite concern about the societal impact of illicit drug markets and related crime, there has been an almost total absence of in-depth research and analysis of the organisation and operation of illicit drug markets in Ireland (Connolly 2005, 2006). This presentation will discuss findings of the first comprehensive study of illicit drugs markets in Ireland.
