More women hospitalised in drug-related emergencies

More than half the people admitted to hospital in drug-related emergencies are female, new data has revealed.

The European drug report 2018 has reported that of the almost 4,000 overdose cases at Irish hospitals, one-third can be attributed to people under the age of 25.

A third of these overdoses are related to non-opioids, mainly paracetamol.

Comparing figures from 2006 and 2015, there has been an increase of almost 20pc in the number of people suffering drug-induced deaths.
