Half of teens referred to drug service had attempted suicide

Of 34 teenagers referred to Matt Talbot Adolescent Services (MTAS), 15 had attempted suicide in the three months prior to referral.

Ten of the 15 were aged 16, three were 15 and two were just 14. All, bar one, are male.

These figures are horrific and very alarming and need to be recognised. Suicide has always come into play in our work, but never at this level," said Edel Foley, clinical manager of the Cork-based centre.

"If you look at the trends and the research internationally, it’s really highlighting the huge level of suicide among young males. This is highlighting it for us as a service," said Ms Foley.

"If you look at suicides, they always say it’s never one stressor. It’s usually a multitude. Obviously, alcohol and drugs can be a factor."

She said protective factors, such as resilience, connectedness and problem-solving skills, were crucial and called for more effective action to prevent suicidal behaviour among young people.

Ms Foley said MTAS dealt with two suicides last year. Both youths needed detoxification facilities, which they didn’t get. She said there was a need for medically managed detoxification programmes and mental health services for teens.
