Dr Marie Claire Van Hout from the School of Health Sciences at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) has been invited to undertake a significant nationwide research project for the International Collaboration on ADHD and Substance Abuse, known as the ICASA foundation.
The ‘International ADHD in Substance Use Disorders Prevalence Study’ [IASP study], it investigates the prevalence of ADHD in adult patients referred for treatment of addiction problems. Dr Van Hout will also take part in a review of the risk factors for development of substance abuse disorders in children or adolescents with ADHD with other researchers in the foundation.
Dr Van Hout said the initial findings of the IASP study in other countries show an incidence rate of 20% in the 2,500 individuals examined.
