Supporting families living with drug use

''Only another parent can know the pain. I was watching him slowly kill himself,'' said Pat Herlihy, explaining how joining the BAY Family Support Group in Cork has helped her cope with a child living with a drug addiction.

Pat gave an honest and courageous testimony at the 12th annual service of commemoration and hope in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Dublin's Sean McDermott Street last week.

Hundreds of family members and representatives from support organisations from all over the island of Ireland attended the service in remembrance of those who have died from drug use and related causes.

The service is organised by volunteers from the Family Support Network (FSN), an independent self-help organisation that supports the development of family support groups throughout Ireland. The theme of the service was 'Reclaiming Family Through Rehabilitation' and FSN director Sadie Grace said the family has a huge part to play in rehabilitation, but ''it is a resource that is not being tapped into''.
