Rate of alcohol-related liver disease triples in 12 years

One of Ireland's leading adolescent psychiatrists has revealed that the number of people admitted to hospital with symptoms of Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD) has more than trebled over a recent 12-year period.

Writing a letter in the latest edition of the Oxford Alcohol and Alcoholism journal, Dr Bobby Smyth said the number of people aged between 15 and 34 being discharged after ALD treatment had increased by 247 per cent between 1995 and 2007.
