Quit cigs campaign enters 2nd phase

 

A HSE campaign aimed at helping people to stop smoking has enjoyed major success since its introduction in June and is now beginning its second phase.

The QUIT campaign highlights the fact that one in every two smokers will die of a tobacco-related disease and this latest phase will feature TV and radio advertisements.

"While most people know that ‘smoking is bad for you', very few know just how bad it is. Our campaign tells them the real story, but also shows them how they can escape that frightening statistic," exlained Dr Fenton Howell, the HSE's director of public health.

He emphasised that there are currently around one million smokers in Ireland today and some 50% of these will die as a result of the habit. However this campaign provides 'clear signposts on how to quit, with a range of supports accessible to every smoker'.
