Prescription addiction

Benzodiazepines are a minor form of tranquillizer designed to reduce symptoms such as anxiety and to help people get some sleep. They are also used in some cases of epilepsy and for those who are withdrawing from alcohol. Like many other drugs, benzodiazepines are also used recreationally and are sold on the black market.

Benzodiazepines are restricted substances that can only be obtained from a GP. One problem the health system has faced over the years is "doctor shopping" where by multiple prescriptions have been obtained by multiple GPs.

Mick Devine is Clinical Director at Tabor Lodge. He spoke with the Cork Independent about the dangers of benzodiazepines.

"Out of the 200 people we treat a year, 20-25 people have a prescription drug addition. Most of the time, patients will be addicted to something else. Benzodiazepines and opiates can easily become apart of a drug addict's profile. These drugs are used to bring people down when they are on a high. Use of benzodiazepines can be chaotic," Mick says.
