O’Brien pledges to tackle drugs ‘scourge’

The “scourge of drugs” will be one of the main issues to be tackled by the new Sinn Féin spokesperson for justice, equality and defence, Jonathan O’Brien.

The Farranree TD said that in his own constituency of Cork North Central, he has seen an increase in heroin use while the services to deal with it have been "starved of funding”.

“Of particular concern is the impact of cuts on frontline policing and the fight against drugs." said Deputy O'Brien. "The government have said they intend to implement €3 billion in cutbacks next year. There will be more cutbacks the year after. Can the Minister for Justice promise me that the budget for combatting drugs and organised crime will be ring-fenced from these reductions?"
