NI mephedrone ban not deterring users

The introduction of a ban on mephedrone in Northern Ireland earlier this year has not deterred users from continuing to take the drug, a new study has revealed.

Mephedrone is a synthetic stimulant that was previously widely available in head shops. The drug was banned in the UK, including Northern Ireland, in March. It was then banned in the Republic in May.

Researchers at Queen's University in Belfast carried out one of the first studies into mephedrone use since the Northern Ireland ban. They interviewed 23 mephedrone users over a two-month period.
