Multiple drug use on the increase

Speaking following the release of the Task Forces’s second strategic plan ‘The Way Forward’, Orla Irwin said that an increasing number of people are turning to a combination of drugs or polydrug use, with many developing an addiction to alcohol and over-the-counter drugs.

Ms Irwin said that alcohol is one of the main concerns of the Task Force, with the level of binge drinking in Ireland over three times the European average. There is also evidence to suggest that alcohol is a major gateway to illicit drug use, particularly for young people.
