More than 110 ecstasy-related Irish deaths have occurred in 11 years the #SaferStudentNights

IN just 11 years there have been more than 110 ecstasy-related Irish deaths.

Between 2004 and 2015, 117 people lost their lives from the deadly pill.

Another 89 people during that time died from what are known as new psychoactive substances, or legal highs, such as party pills and synthetic cocaine.

To try and combat deaths and serious incidents, the Union of Students in Ireland has now partnered with the HSE on the #SaferStudentNights campaign.

Here, the HSE’s Clinical Lead for Addiction Services Dr Eamon Keenan tells Nicola Bardon why the campaign is so important, why people should “start low and go slow” and about the connection between drugs and mental health.

“PATTERNS of drug use and the populations using those drugs have been changing across Europe in recent years.
