Just what is the truth about those ‘safe-drinking’ limits?

 

To every moderate drinker in the country, it's the magic number. It forms the safety zone in which social tipplers and connoisseurs can sip to their hearts' content without having to worry about the damage they're doing themselves -- or without needing to feel guilty about it.

Because these alcohol guidelines -- 21 units per week for a male and 14 for a female -- are embedded into our mentality following countless awareness campaigns, you might expect them to be rooted in firm scientific evidence.

Alas, you'd be wrong.
