HSE announces €300,000 investment in community health and addiction services

Pat Healy, Regional Director of Operations, HSE South today, 18th June 2010, announced a major investment of €300,000 in community health and addiction services for the Northside of Cork.

Announcing the funding while visiting a range of HSE funded youth and community health projects in the area, Mr Healy also strongly reiterated the HSE’s ongoing commitment to the development of health services for people locally.

The significant investment will be utilised to develop and expand on a range of community health and addiction projects across the Northside of Cork city and includes funding for:

  • a fourth Community Health Worker for the Health Action Zone (HAZ) for the Northside of Cork City

  • supporting community participation in Primary Care Teams with a focus on child health and family support

  • a part time post for Knocknaheeny Senior Citizens to co-ordinate activities and services for older people in the area

  • a new initiative by the Springboard Project to support families in Knocknaheeny and Farranree area

  • additional nursing supports for the Drug & Alcohol Services on the city’s northside

  • Cork Local Drugs Task Force projects provided by eight community and voluntary groups and supported by two addiction counsellors

Announcing the funding, Mr Healy said, “I am delighted to announce this significant funding through the HSE’s North Lee, Community Work Department and HSE Drug & Alcohol Services. HSE continues to move towards providing more health services in local communities, so that people can access services closer to where they live and avoid unnecessary stays in acute hospitals for services they could get more easily elsewhere. This funding ensures a number of projects in the area can be enhanced and developed and meet the needs of local people; something to which the HSE is firmly committed”.
