Heroin problem hasn’t peaked yet

Funding for Cork’s Local Drugs Task Force must be protected in the upcoming budget if the city is to continue battling its growing heroin problem.

That is according to City Councillor Jonathan O’Brien, who was speaking to the Cork News in reaction to EU figures which ranked Ireland highest of 15 countries for its level of opiate use.

An average of just over seven people in every 1,000 can now be defined as ‘problem opiate users’ in the Republic of Ireland. Waiting lists for heroin addiction treatment outside of Dublin are also the longest in Europe, at up to two years; however, the percentage of users in treatment (50%) is high in comparison to other EU countries. The figures were contained in the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction’s 2010 annual report.
