Heroin centres to open across country

Heroin treatment centres will open in several counties outside Dublin as use of the drug continues to grow countrywide. Some experts estimate the true level of addiction to be twice that identified in the last major study in 2002.

"This is by any measure spiralling out of control in many counties and we already know from Dublin what the fallout of that is," said Dr Garrett McGovern, a Dublin-based GP who has specialised in clinical addiction for the past 12 years.

"There are counties with some heroin services and in others there is just nothing.

"Wexford has a large number of drug users and there are no GPs taking patients at all; there is nothing. They have to go to Dublin and get on a waiting list."

Dr McGovern said Kildare was another problem county with no treatment options for drug users but said the true extent of addiction and its treatment requirements is unknown.

The HSE said that last year, of the 69 clinics operating throughout the country, 85% had no waiting lists at all and 3% had a waiting list of around one month. The remaining 12% accounted for the majority of those awaiting treatment.

"To address service demands in this area, the HSE has identified the need for additional facilities around the country and is putting in place a number of additional methadone services in Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Louth," said a spokesperson.

hi.I have been connected to drug services in dublin since as early as 1980 and to be brutally honest there has been little change since then other than the introduction of widespread methadone provision. I have also seen the development of an alternate drug industry with this methadone provision. Personally I do’nt believe that the political will to address the issues exists> there are hundereds of people employed in this alternate drug industry but as for any tricke down effect that affects the addict, the eight postal districts that are primarily affected by the drug thing I do’nt see change of any consequence so whats going to be any different in the rural areas. I honestly believe that the stagnation within drug services suits a lot of people and i’m not holding my breathe waiting for change of any consequence

I have baeen an heroin addict for 17 years, I,m on a methodoine programme. as far as I am concered nobody gives a shit, the waithng list for treatment is a disgrace if you have any valium in your system you can not go in to treatment” until the valium is out of your system. That is silly that’s why I want to go into treatment to get off valium and methodoine, there is a tablet that stops patients craving and you hardly feel any withdrawl systems of phy or heroin. But the docto r will only give ot to a few people tht is not fairhe can,t pick who he wants. the tablet is called something like bargodine or bargosoine I am not sure of the tablet it is 70 euro for one tablet.I belive every patient on a clinic should be given one chance to take this course of tablets to be drug free, it will be cheaper in the long run. Please Please do something about the methodoine problem in Ireland there has to be something out there that woould help us adddicts. We are people with families give us a chance. If you dont no one else will.
dont give up on hope?
