Crystal Meth seizure sparks fear in Swords

A major seizure of the highly addictive drug, crystal meth or 'ice' on the doorstep of the county capital has raised fears in Swords that the dangerous substance is about to become part of the drugs scene in the town.

Up to now only isolated incidents of Crystal Meth abuse have taken place in the town and earlier this year, Swords Youth Service dealt with a handful of cases of people in their late teens who had been taking the drug. Local gardaí have recorded only a few small seizures of the drug this year but a seizure of some €250,000 worth of crystal meth at Dublin Airport means this region is now being targetted by suppliers of the highly addictive substance.

Aine Campbell, a youth worker with Swords Youth Service, said that the organisation made inquiries to the Regional Drugs Task Force earlier in the year about the 'prevalence of crystal meth in the area'. This came in the wake of the youth service ' becoming aware that it was present to some extent in the area from talking to young adults during our outreach work'.
