Join Alcohol Action Ireland at Facing ‘The Fear’: Alcohol and Mental Health in Ireland to hear expert speakers discuss how alcohol is impacting on mental health in Ireland.

Alcohol Action Ireland’s 2013 conference takes place on Wednesday, November 20, at the Royal College of Physicians, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, from 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Expert speakers will discuss alcohol’s strong links to a range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide.

Facing ‘The Fear’: Alcohol and Mental Health in Ireland will be chaired by journalist, author and broadcaster Brian O’Connell, reporter on Today with Sean O Rourke on RTE Radio 1 and author of Wasted: A Sober Journey Through Drunken Ireland.

Conference attendees will also hear from people who will share their own personal experiences of alcohol and the impact it has had on them and their loved ones.

Speakers

Speakers at the conference will include:

Dr Bobby Smyth is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, working full-time with adolescents who have substance use disorders since 2003. He is clinical lead at three multidisciplinary outpatient treatment services in South Dublin and a board member of Alcohol Action Ireland.

Dr Ella Arensmann is Director of Research with the National Suicide Research Foundation and Adjunct Professor with the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health University College Cork. Dr Arensmann has been involved in research into suicide and self- harm over the last 25 years.

Dr Philip McGarry is a Consultant Psychiatrist in Belfast. He was Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Northern Ireland from 2009 to 2013, having previously acted as Policy  Chair. Dr McGarry has been active in lobbying for Government to stand up to commercial interests and take a lead on minimum pricing, as well as related alcohol policy measures.

Dr Claire Hayes is a Clinical Psychologist, Educational Psychologist and Clinical Director of Aware, Ireland’s depression support charity. Aware works to create a society where people who experience depression and related mood disorders, and their families, are understood and supported, are free from stigma and have access to a broad range of support options
