Alcohol impact on drug users highlighted

Despite being regulated, unlike illicit drugs, alcohol has a prevalence of 80 per cent compared to just 1 per cent to 5 per cent for illegal substances, and a much wider spectrum of effects, a leading public health specialist has said.

Alcohol also affected all classes, unlike illicit drugs, which tended to be used by mostly disadvantaged people, said Prof Joe Barry, who is head of TCD’s Department of Public Health and Primary Care. He added that users of alcohol also tended to be in the mainstream.
