Advice for Anyone Travelling to Czech Republic: Methanol Poisoning Incidents

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today advised anyone travelling to the Czech Republic to avoid consuming locally produced liquor and to be aware that there is a ban on all products with alcohol content of 20% or greater, due to a number of fatalities as a result of methanol poisoning.

The FSAI states that it has been informed by the European Commission that the health authorities in the Czech Republic have banned the sale and distribution of any form of liquor with alcohol content of 20% or greater, as a result of these poisoning incidents. To date, 19 people have died and 36 people have been admitted to hospital after drinking illegally produced liquor that contains high levels of methanol.

The FSAI is in contact with the Czech authorities who are investigating this incident and they have confirmed that it is confined to the Czech Republic only.

The FSAI will continue to liaise with the Czech Republic authorities and the European Commission and will update consumers as necessary.
