85% think level of alcohol consumption too high

A new survey has found that 85% of people believe the level of alcohol consumption in Ireland is too high.

In a study by the Health Research Board, three in every four respondents said Irish society was too tolerant of excessive drinking.

Almost 60% of people believe the Government is not doing enough to reduce alcohol consumption, with 78% calling for public health measures to address the problem.

Some 72% of those who took part in the survey said they knew somebody who, in their opinion, drank too much.
