1 in 10 male cancers caused by alcohol

Alcohol use causes almost one in 10 cancers in men and one in 33 cancers in women throughout western Europe, the results of a new study indicate.

German researchers based their findings on a World Health Organisation (WHO) study involving over 363,000 men and women in eight European countries, including the UK, France, Greece and the Netherlands.

Most of the participants were aged between 35 and 70. They completed a detailed questionnaire on diet and lifestyle at the start of the study. Alcohol consumption was measured by specific questions on the amount, frequency and type of beverage that was consumed at present and in the past.
