Christmas harm reduction

For many people the festive period is a time to celebrate and for some this may involve the use of substances. Here at Drugs.ie, we understand that there are a number of short and long term risks associated with substance use but also recognise that some people will choose to use.

This festive period, we want to remind people that while there are risks and it is safer not to use, we want to help keep you informed so you can reduce the harms.

Drug Trends Christmas 2023

The changing cannabis market
There is a risk of unknown contents and synthetic cannabinoids appearing in products. Synthetic cannabinoids have been found in herbal (plant material),vape/liquid, edible and other THC products in Ireland. Find out more here.

High strength stimulants
High strength MDMA is a current concern. As part of our pilot project this summer, we found that MDMA products ranged from containing 35mg – 235mg of MDMA.  We also found that cyrystals and powders were also high strength.
You can’t be sure which product is super strength. High strength products increase the risks by accidental over consumption which can lead to a drug emergency. See our pilot findings here.

Unknown contents and new drugs
There is always a risk of unknown contents and adulteraunts appearing in drugs. We are concerned that new psychoactive substances could appear in drugs without people knowing. We are aware that synthetic cathinones have been appearing in MDMA crystals, powders and pills in Europe. See our update here.
