Report on alcohol misuse by young people
Joint Committee on Health and Children, 2004.
The Joint Committee on Health and Children was established in November 2002, and from the outset, had identified alcohol misuse among young people as a priority in its work programme. In July 2003 a sub-committee was set up to examine the evidence and present a report with recommendations. For the purpose of this report, young people were defined as those between the ages of 12 and 25. The report makes 10 key recommendations to be implemented as a matter of top national priority.

The Minister for Health and Children established the Strategic Task Force on Alcohol (STFA) in January 2002, as recommended in the first report of the Commission on Liquor Licensing. The brief of the Strategic Task Force on Alcohol is, inter alia, to recommend specific, evidence based, measures to Government to prevent and reduce alcohol related harm in Ireland.

Report of the Benzodiazepine Committee

The Benzodiazepine Committee was established by the Minister for Health in June 2000 in order to examine current prescription practices and use of benzodiazepines in Ireland. The report outlines the facts about benzodiazepine use in Ireland and makes a number of recommendations. This report was published with a companion publication, 'Good Practice Guidelines' to assist clinicians in adopting best practice.
