People urged to ‘say when sooner’

The Irish Heart Foundation has launched a campaign urging people to know their alcohol intake limits.

The charity is highlighting the averse effects on heart health of drinking more than the recommended alcohol intake.

The 'Say when Sooner' campaign stresses that continuous excess alcohol intake can increase your risk of conditions such as stroke and atrial fibrillation.

A survey carried out for the Heart Foundation found that only 9% of adults know what constitutes a standard drink.

One standard drink is a 100ml glass of wine or a half pint of beer.

The recommended weekly limit for men is 17 standard drinks per week while for women the number is 11.
