Alcohol linked to 900 cases of cancer a year

Even just one relaxing glass of wine at the end of the day increases the risk of cancer - and drinking will be linked to 900 cases of the disease this year.

The HSE has warned that all alcohol types, and quantities, carry the same cancer risk.
Youngsters in their teens and 20s who drink are increasing their odds of getting the disease, a new campaign European Action on Alcohol Awareness warns.

The risk of breast cancer rises 34pc for women who drink in their youth.
Alcohol causes seven types of cancer for women including mouth, larynx, throat, oesophagus, breast, liver and bowel.

Dr Marie Laffoy, HSE public health specialist, said: "We have known for some time that drinking alcohol regularly increases the risk of developing some types of cancer.
"But this evidence means it's important to get the message out to young people that what they drink now affects their cancer risk in the future," she added.
